What is consumer mains upgrade?

Consumer mains are the cables between the point of attachment on your pole or pit and your main switchboard. In Central Coast homes built before the early 90s these are often undersized 6mm or 10mm cables that can't safely handle modern loads - EV charging, ducted air-conditioning, pools, and solar export. Replacing them is Level 2 ASP work.

When you need it

  • Installing an EV charger and the circuit keeps tripping or your sparky says the mains won't cope.
  • Adding solar and the retailer requires the mains to be upgraded before export is permitted.
  • A renovation adding ducted A/C, an induction cooktop or a pool pump.
  • An Ausgrid defect notice flagging the mains as non-compliant.
  • Older insulation that's perished or visibly damaged.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How do I know if my mains are undersized?
Any circuit trips when multiple large appliances run, visibly old cable with cracked insulation, or an electrician recommending an upgrade before adding a new circuit. We'll confirm on the free site visit.
Overhead or underground - what's better?
UD is tidier and safer from tree strike, but trenching is more expensive. Overhead is cheaper and quicker; we often recommend it for straight, clean runs.
Will I need to upgrade my switchboard too?
Sometimes. If the existing board is an old ceramic-fuse unit it's likely unable to accept the larger mains and won't have RCDs. We'll quote both together if it's required.
How long will I be without power?
Typically 2-4 hours for overhead; UD work can usually stay connected until the final changeover.
