What is private power pole installation?

A private power pole carries the electricity from the Ausgrid network onto your property. If you're building on an acreage block, subdividing, or adding a second dwelling, you'll almost certainly need a new pole - and that work has to be done by a Level 2 ASP electrician. We install private poles across the Central Coast, from Kariong and Somersby through to rural properties around Wyong, Yarramalong and the Dooralong Valley.

When you need it

  • A new build on a block without mains already running to the house location.
  • A subdivision where the second lot needs its own private supply.
  • Replacing a leaning, cracked or rotted existing pole (see our power pole replacement page).
  • Adding a granny flat, shed or workshop that needs its own service.
  • An Ausgrid defect notice requiring a non-compliant pole to be replaced.

Our process

Site inspection

We visit the site, check Ausgrid's point of attachment, measure setbacks, confirm pole height and identify services to avoid.

Written quote

Fixed quote covering the pole, bracket, cable, excavation, reinstatement, certifications and Ausgrid notifications.

Ausgrid notifications

We lodge the Notice of Service Work (NOSW) and coordinate any required network outage with Ausgrid.

Installation

Excavate footing, stand the pole (hardwood or steel), attach brackets, run the service, terminate at the point of attachment.

Test, energise, certify

We test the installation, request energisation from Ausgrid, issue your CCEW and handover paperwork.

What's included

  • Hardwood or galvanised steel pole sized to your span and loading
  • Concrete footing or compacted backfill per AS/NZS 7000
  • Stainless pole top bracket, insulators and anchor
  • Service cable from the network to your switchboard
  • Excavation, reinstatement and site clean-up
  • All Ausgrid notifications (NOSW / EWR) and your CCEW certificate
Compliance & paperwork

Common questions

Frequently asked

How long does installing a new private pole take?
Most single-pole installations are completed in a day once Ausgrid has approved the notification. Complex sites (rock, long cable runs, traffic control) can run into a second day.
Do I own the pole once it's installed?
Yes - anything on the property side of the point of attachment is yours, which is why it's called a private pole. You're responsible for its condition and Ausgrid can issue a defect notice if it deteriorates.
Hardwood or steel - which is better?
Hardwood is cheaper and lasts 25-40 years; steel is longer-life, lower-maintenance and essential in bushfire-prone zones. We'll recommend the right option after inspecting your site.
Can you install a pole on a sloping or rocky block?
Yes. We've installed poles across Kariong, Somersby, Mount White and the hinterland where rock and slope are the norm. Expect rock breaking or screw-piling to add to the quote.
Do you handle Ausgrid notifications?
Yes - the NOSW, EWR, plating and the CCEW are all part of our quoted price. You don't need to deal with Ausgrid directly.
Do you offer emergency pole replacements?
Yes. If your pole has come down in a storm or been hit, call the 24/7 line and we can set up a temporary supply while we organise the permanent replacement.
