Frequently asked
Your questions, answered
Everything we get asked most often about Level 2 work, pricing, timing and paperwork.
Level 2 basics
What is a Level 2 ASP electrician?
An Accredited Service Provider (ASP) Level 2 is an electrician authorised by Ausgrid to work on the network side of your electricity supply - poles, overhead services, underground services, metering, and disconnection/reconnection. Only ASPs can perform this work and issue the paperwork needed to close out the job with Ausgrid.
How do I know if I need a Level 2 or a general electrician?
If the work involves your pole, service line (the cable from the pole / pit to your house), consumer mains, main meter, or any disconnection from the network, you need a Level 2. Anything inside the switchboard and beyond - outlets, lights, circuits - can usually be done by a general electrician.
Why is Level 2 work more expensive?
It usually involves specialist equipment (EWPs, crane trucks), direct coordination with Ausgrid, outage planning, and certified paperwork. It's also higher-risk live work. We keep our prices transparent and fixed after a free on-site inspection.
Power poles
Who owns my power pole?
If the pole is on your property, it's a private pole and you own it. Anything on the street / network side is Ausgrid's.
How often should I inspect my pole?
Ausgrid expects property owners to inspect private poles at least yearly, particularly before bushfire season and after major storms.
How long does a pole last?
Hardwood poles typically last 25-40 years. Steel poles often 50+ years. Coastal zones can shorten these timelines.
Meters & metering
Who organises the smart meter - me or my retailer?
Your retailer is the official driver, but the physical installation must be done by a Level 2 ASP. We can liaise with your retailer on your behalf.
How long does a meter install take?
Power is off for around 30-60 minutes; total attendance is usually 1-2 hours.
Do I need a new meter for solar?
Yes - a bi-directional meter is required to record export. Without one your feed-in tariff can't be paid.
Defect notices
What is a defect notice?
A formal direction from Ausgrid requiring you to fix an electrical defect on your property. Usually issued after a routine inspection, post-storm, or following a safety audit.
What's the 21-day clock?
Most defect notices give you 21 days to fix the defect. Red stickers are shorter - book a Level 2 immediately.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
Ausgrid can disconnect your supply. Avoid this - book a Level 2 electrician the day you receive the notice.
Pricing & quotes
Are your quotes free?
Yes. On-site quotes are free with no obligation.
Are quotes fixed or hourly?
Fixed. We inspect first, then give you a fixed price in writing.
Do you charge extra for evenings or weekends?
Our standard rates apply during business hours. After-hours and weekends attract a transparent surcharge which we tell you about upfront.
Timing & availability
How fast can you book me in?
Standard jobs typically within the week. Emergencies and red-sticker defect notices we prioritise to same-day or next-day.
Do you service the whole Coast?
Yes - Gosford to Budgewoi and everything in between. Remote rural areas may have a small travel component.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes, 24/7 across the Coast.
Compliance & paperwork
What's a CCEW?
A Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work. It's the document that certifies your job is compliant and notifies Ausgrid and your retailer. We issue one for every job.
Will my insurer want this paperwork?
Yes - especially for switchboard and mains work. We supply everything in a single email pack.
Do you supply ABN and licence details for builders / insurers?
Of course - available on every quote and invoice.
